Basic Leader Training

Leadship Training is an important part of the success of a Cub Scout Pack. It prepares the leader with ways to enhance the program at the Den and Pack level, and helps all of the leaders to provide a Quality Program.

Brand new leaders will benefit from the Fast Start Training available online through the National E-learning site (https://myscouting.scouting.org). But the Fast Start program is only a general introduction to Scouting. More formalized training should follow.

For more formalized training, there are two basic courses for Scout Leaders. Completion of these two courses earns the leader the the "Trained" patch that is shown to the right.

  • Fast Start Training is the first step in the training continuum, and is meant to provide all the information and resources for new leaders to conduct their first meeting, along with guidance for the meetings that follow. This training is available online at the online learning center (olc.scouting.org).  Ideally, leaders should take this training within 48 hours of signing the application to be a leader.
  • New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers—Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders—take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.
  • Cub Scout Leader Specifics Training: This training is specific for different positions: Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, Pack Committee members and Pack Trainers.
  • Youth Protection: Youth Protection is a program designed to protect our Scouts from anything that might be considered inappropriate. It's also designed to educate the leader in the proper precautions he or she needs to take to protect our scouts and leaders from being in harm's way. This training should be renewed every 3 years. Youth Protection training can be completed as an online course over the internet, but to insure proper credit, you must follow the link from your council's webpage. The leader is considered trained upon completion of Fast Start, New Leader Essentials, Leader Specific Training for their position and Youth Protection Training.

Follow this link (https://myscouting.scouting.org).  and login for Youth Protection (if you've not logged in before, you'll need to create an account - and be sure to keep track of your login information). Your BSA Number is on your BSA membership card or you can call Rainbow Council to get the number. You do NOT need to have your BSA number to register and complete the training. When you do have the number, you'll have to update your profile at elearning.org to make sure the records are updated in Rainbow Council's system. For good measure, it's not a bad idea to print off the certificate at the end.

Additional Leader Training

Additional Training is available for leaders that want to have more insight into Scouting. Below is a list of some of the training that is available through Boy Scouts of America.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
This training provides hands-on learning experience designed to give leaders the techniques they need to plan and conduct pack overnight camping. [NOTE: Scouting requires at least one Cub Scout Leader be Baloo Trained in order for a pack to participate in an overnight outing, and that leader also has to be trained in Severe Weather Training - available online at olc.scouting.org]

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL)
Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, the Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. Webelos den leaders should attend this training before conducting Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. In addition to covering basic camping skills, this training features planning campouts and finding resources.

Round Table Meetings
Roundtables are held monthly for the purpose of giving adult leaders the skills and ideas they need to deliver an exciting Cub Scout program to the boys. The roundtable serves also to renew each leaders enthusiasm and dedication. Each roundtable features information and training sessions as well as ideas for ceremonies, games and activities for den and pack meeting. Often these ideas for Pack and Den activities are built around the next months theme or upcoming district or council events.

Scouting University
Scouting University is a day long carnival of action, activities and program ideas. This supplemental training is usually conducted at the District level annually in November. Topics included crafts, cooking, behavior, advancements, program ideas and other areas which help in conducting den and pack meetings.

Woodbadge for the 21st Century
Wood Badge is a multiple-weekend group training course designed to provide adults with advanced leadership skills and a more dedicated involvement in Scouting. Prerequisites for the course include Fast Start Training, New Leader Essentials, and Job Specific Training. It is also recommended that each attendee complete Outdoor Leader Fundamentals prior to attendance. Typically Wood Badge is offerred once per year in the area.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (Boy Scout training)
This training provides essential outdoor skills scout leaders to pass on to their scouts, as well as knowledge on planning, conducting, and leading overnight campouts. It is similar to Baloo training, but is much more in depth. Typically, this training runs from Friday night to Sunday morning at Council, and the Baloo training is held in conjuction during the Saturday portion. They share some classes, but are two distinct training sessions. While it is not a requirement for Cub Scouting, it is an advanced course of outdoor skills from which a a leader can benefit.

Training Schedule

Our District and Council are constantly striving to provide opportunities for their leaders to obtain training. The first, best source for a training schedule is on our Council's website: www.blackhawkscouting.org or District website: www.sycamorebsa.org

While training is ideally done in Council (you'll be with local people trained by people you'll see at Scouting events), it is not required for you to complete your training in Blackhawk Council. All other local area BSA Councils provide training. If you are going to get training outside of Blackhawk Council, check with the District Training Chair to make sure that you have all of the information necessary, and to make sure you will get everything you need to receive credit.
